Sticks and stones...

The name-calling continues. Mrs May has now called me an extremist. I'm losing track of what I've been called by Brexit-supporters since June.
First it was liberal-elite. Then citizen of nowhere. Traitor. Enemy of the people. Loser. Remoaner. Snowflake. Libtard. Saboteur. Have I missed any?
Let this sink in. Our Prime Minister who should bring dignity and integrity to the highest office in the land has spent 9 months calling half of her electorate names. She is deluded, arrogant or ill. Probably all three. Not remotely fit for office.

Political whack-a-mole

Well that went well didn't it? An unecessary election, called for dishonourable reasons, has delivered a new problem. Westminster has turned into political whack-a-mole; no sooner do we see off one bonkers idea, another appears. Like planets aligning for the briefest of moments, in June 2016 a number of different players and agendas overlapped briefly to create havoc in our country. David Cameron's breathtaking arrogance in calling a referendum whilst failing to apply proper safeguards. Nigel Farage's personal obsession with destroying the EU. Boris Johnson's journalistic-mendacity in service of his own amusement and self-advancement. Michael Gove's naked ambition. Aaron Banks's greed and quest for power. Theresa May's opportunistic power-grab. Windrush - twig or branch?

I can't stop thinking about the so-called Windrush scandal. I say so-called, because I think there's a danger that we have got hold of the wrong end of the stick if this is 'only' about the Windrush generation. Or rather, we have grabbed firmly on to the twig, but if we run with that, it will snap away, leaving the main branch, the bigger point, unmoved. Don't get me wrong - the Windrush scandal is certainly shocking. The way individuals have been treated correlates with my definition of criminal. But these individual cases are but twigs from a thicker branch of systemic hostility to "the other". If we allow ourselves to be focused on individual cases, we allow Theresa May and the Government and, in fact, ourselves, off the hook. If the concern is that person A is deported in error, an apology can be made, decisions reversed and even, potentially, compensation made.
